You gotta love the frescos

A little lemon, lots of water and lots of sugar is the recipe for taking the edge off a hot summer’s day. Here, summer never ends and the locals have perfected the art of making frescos naturales. They are basically lemonade’s equivalent but made with whatever they find in the market, with flavors such as:

lime
arroz y pina (rice and pineapple)
tamarindo
chicha (hot pink corn)
chicha bruja (witch’s chicha… the alcoholic variety brewed in rural areas)
pinolillo (corn and chocolate)
papaya
nancite
mango
cacao (ground chocolate seeds)
cocoa (powdered chocolate)
maracuya/calala (passionfruit)
pineapple
ibu (from the ibu tree)
grenadia
sevada (white and gritty but sweet)
guayabana
cantaloupe
linaza
watermelon
starfruit
oatmeal
pitaya
flour (tastes like cake mix!)
tomato
cashew fruit

and others I can’t even pronounce!
